What is the healthiest cheese? Here are some low-sodium, low-calorie and low-fat options. Morning or night? With food or without? Answers to your questions about taking supplements "This allows for variety and preference and can be helpful in planning while also being realistic for those who might be feeling the challenges of time, budget, and striving to put a more nutritious meal together." Read more about healthy eating here: "Aim to include at least two to three of the food groups each meal," she suggests. Zeratsky offers similar advice and says it's OK not to eat every food group in every meal. She adds that it's also important to choose healthy foods that one enjoys and will consistently want to eat so healthy eating "becomes a lifestyle rather than a 'diet.'" Uma Naidoo, MD, director of nutritional and lifestyle psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and the author of “ This is Your Brain on Food," says one rule of thumb she follows is to "remember to eat the rainbow." This means a diet "rich in colorful veggies and berries to make sure you’re getting plenty of mental health supporting polyphenols, vitamins and minerals," she says. This can be helped by remembering a few tips. Once one understands what a balanced diet is - and what it is not - such knowledge can be implemented into one's everyday routine. Additional vitamin and mineral supplementation might also be desired for other benefits, but usually shouldn't replace the natural source of the nutrient. On that front, she advises that a balanced diet, "should also not require supplements." That is, of course, unless one has nutrient deficiencies and supplementation has been advised by a physician. She adds that there are medical conditions and situations that might involve such lists, "but even they should still allow for a variety from all food groups." One thing to look out for is "any diet that reads like a 'do and don’t eat list' because they may be lacking in some nutrients," explains Zeratsky. "This puts them back to square one once they tire of the new 'wonder' diet." "When one makes radical changes in their diet, they may reap impressive benefits in the short term, but data indicate that people don’t stick with the changes in the long term," she says. Zeratsky cautions to also be careful with fad diets. "Fad diets are called so because they come and go," she says. Lichtenstein agrees, and says such diets can make it hard to achieve lasting results. Examples of processed foods include frozen meals, fast food, flavored yogurt, soda, and most items that are packaged in a factory such as cookies, chips and candy. What not to eat on a balanced dietĪnother important aspect of eating a balanced diet is knowing which foods should be avoided. "The easiest way to work towards achieving a balanced diet is to limit intake of ultra-processed food and to prepare as much food as possible at home," advises Lichtenstein. "A balanced diet is one that includes a variety of foods from all food groups," explains Zeratsky. Such a diet should also provide the hydration and nutrients needed to maintain energy levels high enough for plenty of physical and cardiovascular activity.Īlice Lichtenstein, DSc, director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Team at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, says a balanced diet is "rich in a variety of fruits and vegetables, products made with whole grains rather than refined grains, beans and nuts, low-fat and fat-free in place of full-fat dairy items, and mostly plant sources of proteins." She says such eating will help with "meeting essential vitamin and mineral requirements for most individuals," and can be adapted for individual needs. Though various health advocacy organizations have their own definitions of what a balanced diet means, each organization agrees that a balanced diet, sometimes called a healthy dietary pattern, needs to provide the nutrients required to help one's body grow and develop, build immunity against infection and disease and remain healthy. Experts weigh in on what a balanced diet is and where to begin. "Including vegetables and fruits as snacks can help improve one's diet and allow for more options at mealtime," says Zeratsky.īut wanting to achieve a balanced diet and doing so aren't the same thing. While well-rounded meal choices are often the focus of a balanced diet, healthy snack options are important, too. "Finding a way of eating that is nutritious and sustainable not only promotes health but can be reassuring in meeting lifestyle goals as well," says Kate Zeratsky, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. A balanced diet is vital for maintaining good mental and physical health, optimal weight and fitness, and assuring you feel your best. How to track sleep stages with Apple Watch It is considered to be optional sleep that is less crucial.Īpple’s sleep tracking feature logs your sleep into these different stages using information from the accelerometer and heart rate monitor. REM stands for rapid eye movement and occurs at intervals during the late part of the night.Plus, it helps keep your immune system functioning. Deep sleep is the most important sleep stage because it lets your body release growth hormone and works to build and repair muscles, bones, and tissue. It is the phase of the sleep cycle where it is harder to wake someone up. Deep sleep is exactly what it sounds like.Core sleep is the equivalent of light sleep and takes place in the first few hours of your sleep. You can also see your time awake as well. Instead, they focus on core sleep, deep sleep, and REM. The four stages are awake, light, deep, and REM. Now, your Apple device doesn’t use these exact terms when tracking your sleep. According to most sleep experts, there are four sleep cycles, which are also known as stages. If you’re not familiar with what sleep stages are, have no fear. Recent research indicates the multitude of sleep stage benefits, including better immune function, metabolism, mental health and mood, memory, learning, and other critical body functions. While we may prioritize our work and social lives, it’s crucial to remember that our bodies need rest, and in particular, sleep, to function optimally. Unfortunately, sleep is one of those things that often goes overlooked. Yet most of us know very little about sleep and our sleep health.
I've played the game myself, and there isn't an normal path from Titania to Macbeth, but there is a normal path from Sector X to Macbeth. Hey, I'm just a random person who searched "Star fox 64 map" on google images, and the image on the strategy guide led me here, but I just wanted to clarify that there is a mistake with the map, in case you didn't know that already. I also moved Fortuna to Fichina, even though it was originally named "Fortuna." (Oh, and if you didn't figure out my terminology, "tomorrow" means "in about five minutes"). Anyway, I've fixed the image and imagemap, as well as all links and the table of contents back to what the game actually says. Possibly, it might have been made before the translations were, so they were using translated versions of the Japanese names. I'm guessing they were either completely mistakes or that the guide was made from a pre-release version. I'll get around to fixing the page names (and the names on that image) sometime tomorrow. I downloaded the EU version ROM, and the names there are consistent with the US. I say that we should go with what the actual game has, not what some crack-headed idiot that wrote the guide put down. I naturally assumed that the guide was correct (it being "Official" and all), but I guess not (for example, that scan of the planets was from the Official Guidebook). I got the names from the Official Nintendo Power guidebook, but I just played through the game and noticed all the inaccuracies between the book's names and the game's names. Prod ( Talk) 19:41, 31 August 2007 (CDT)ītw, US is "Bolse Defense Outpost." - Notmyhandle ( talk If there is a naming difference between localizations, we should stick to the English name (hopefully US and EU are the same), though the alternate name can be mentioned. Skizz, where'd you get the names, or find that image? - Notmyhandle ( talk I just checked my game and it says Katina for me (US version). If this is true though, why does it not say Katarina, and why are we still calling Fichina "Fortuna" if that was a translation mix-up? And if we're keeping Fortuna for ease, why not use Katina and Bolse if most users of an English-language wiki, on an article with the non-European/Australian name would be familiar with Katina, Bolse, and Fortuna? (I only mention the game-name thing in case there's a difference in level names between the versions.) Triste Scarecrow 12:25, 31 August 2007 (CDT) From what I've heard There are no L sounds in Japanese, only R sounds (which sound similiar to I looked it up (on Wikipedia, mind you) and it said that Katina was called Katarina in the Japanese version of the game. Were Katalina/Borus later changes, misunderstandings about the names, the names from another version, or what? Triste Scarecrow 12:11, 31 August 2007 (CDT) Whenever I play the Star Fox 64 game, I know that it says "Bolse", not "Borus", and I'm pretty sure it says "Katina". Two names that got corrected - from Katina to Katalina and from Bolse to Borus - don't make sense to me. This makes PDFs better suited for documents such as contracts, manuals, and other forms that are meant to be printed or viewed on a computer screen. Opening a PDF file on some devices may require the user to rotate the file for easier viewing. In contrast, PDF is a fixed-layout format, meaning that the content is laid out in a specific way and cannot be reflowed for different screen sizes. This makes it a great format for eBooks, which are often read on devices with small screens such as smartphones, tablets, and e-readers. It is designed for reflowable content, meaning that the text display can be optimized for different device window sizes. ePUB vs PDF: What's The Difference?ĮPUB is a free and open eBook standard from the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). This article will show you how to convert ePUB files to PDF. For document users who want convenience and portability, PDF is the way to go. The file format is also well-suited for printing. PDF remains a popular format because it can be easily shared and viewed on any device. However, ePUB is arguably equipped with more features that make it ideal for reading on electronic devices. Today, PDF is still the go-to format for many eBook lovers. Did you know that PDF is the world's oldest eBook format? That's right PDFs were invented in the late 1990s to share documents electronically. This Review examines several emerging features of autophagy and postulates how they may be linked to aging as well as to the development and progression of disease. While autophagy is intimately linked to health, the intricate relationship among autophagy, aging and disease remains unclear. This includes dementia, cancer and heart disease.īut, at the moment, we just don’t know enough about autophagy in humans to make any claims about what we can do to increase it, or any health benefits.īen Lewis, science writer and communicator at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, co-authored this article.Autophagy is a fundamental cellular process that eliminates molecules and subcellular elements, including nucleic acids, proteins, lipids and organelles, via lysosome-mediated degradation to promote homeostasis, differentiation, development and survival. Because of this, it has the potential to address some of the biggest health issues our society currently faces. So far, we know it can slow biological ageing in laboratory animals. However, nothing directly shows it can increase autophagy in humans.Īutophagy has only been widely studied for around 15 years. One prominent product for sale is spermidine, which can increase autophagy in the laboratory, such as in yeast and cultured human cells. So exactly how much fasting is required to increase autophagy in humans is completely unknown: influencer claims of 16, 24 or 48 hours are stabs in the dark. For example, a mouse can only go without food for two to three days before dying, while a human can go without food for weeks. Indeed, work on the mechanisms of autophagy really did win the Nobel Prize in 2016.īut influencers’ claims wildly extrapolate from preliminary data without context. ShutterstockĪs dubious as these claims might seem, a lot of them do tend to stem from a grain of truth. There is no end of advice and nutritional supplements that promise to increase autophagy for healthy ageing. Or, you can buy supplements claiming to increase autophagy with ingredients such as citrus bergamot. These tend to be books or material that explain how to diet your way to more autophagy (using intermittent fasting or keto-diets for example). Given the positive results in animals, and because autophagy is sensitive to nutrition, it is not surprising there is no end of advice and nutritional supplements that promise to increase autophagy for healthy ageing. At best this makes various claims of boosting autophagy and its benefits premature, and at worst, completely incorrect. We simply do not understand enough about autophagy in humans, and there has not been enough time to test whether autophagy-boosting diets or supplements actually work in people. There's no magic way to boost your energy. We’re still not sure about the levels of autophagy in tissues like the brain or whether the autophagy activity we see in the blood matches elsewhere in the body. But even that is limited to blood samples. How would we know if it’s the same in humans?įor us to know if fasting, taking a pill or some other activity affects autophagy in humans (and our health), we need to be able to measure if autophagy is increasing or decreasing.Īnd our group has developed the first test of its kind to measure how autophagy activity varies in humans. Of mice and men: why animal trial results don’t always translate to humans But, and this is the big stumbling block, we don’t really know how it acts in humans. This means diet can potentially modify autophagy. If we decrease nutrition in laboratory cells and laboratory animals, autophagy increases to compensate. And because autophagy is crucial for survival during starvation, it is sensitive to nutrient and energy levels. Decreased autophagy also accelerates signs of dementia and heart disease in mice.Īutophagy degrades cellular components to re-use as an energy source during advanced stages of starvation in mice. For example, genetically engineered mice with less autophagy are more likely to develop tumours. Removing these waste products can potentially affect age-related diseases. Author provided Mice benefit, but do humans? ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. For example: I use the Messages app on my computer and I have a group chat with all of my friends and we share countless attachments every day. I deleted the message in the Messages app and that DID NOT free up any space and then I realized that even when you delete a message from the Messages app on your mac it does not delete the Archive of that message. If you click the magnifying glass in the top right corner and type in the contacts name, the archived message will show up in your finder. Navigate to that folder and you will see all of your archived messages. DELETE all of these and then empty from trash and you will see a lot of space free up in "other". I deleted all archived messages and it freed up over 50gigs. In the last few years site upgrades have brought some negative comments from contributors. Especially when you are very familiar with the old ones. Not everyone likes upgrades to existing tools. As you can imagine, this has huge potential for a whole lot of sales. They struck a deal with Facebook, meaning that every time someone uses an image that Facebook makes available in its advertising system from Shutterstock, the contributor gets paid a subscription-rate download royalty. This is helping push up the return per image (or RPI) of most contributors at Shutterstock. The even better news is that these ‘single image on demand’ sales, (or SOD) are increasing in frequency. Yet again Shutterstock seems to know how to win both buyers and contributors alike. This is very welcome news, especially when some other sites seem to be dropping prices or commissions. Some individual sales are netting people anywhere from $16 to $120 per image. Suffice to say though, these new licenses are earning contributors a lot of extra income. Mostly (they tell us) they target high-volume corporate clients. Over the last few years Shutterstock have added many new image licenses that they aren’t giving too much information about. Thus, they get our highest rating of any agency! All these positives leads to a very positive Shutterstock contributor review. Both the buyer facing and contributor facing websites work well and are regularly updated. They are the industry leader in many ways. Shutterstock is a well established stock agency. |
